My work as Karosquare

My old friends call me Karo. My nickname inspired me to come up with Karosquare. It would translate to Karo Karo or square square, because a Karo is a square in german, and a square is a Karo in english. A bit complicated you may say, but in my head it all makes sense. Same same, but different.

I like to take things apart and put them back together in a new context. This is probably why I’ve been drawn to collage consistently and from a very young age. But I didn’t realise it until after I finished my studies at a small and peculiar art school in a small town in Germany, close to Cologne.

I couldn’t wait to escape the countryside idyll, so I flew to London in 2012 and declared it my new home. After a few years in the Old Smoke, I landed my first exhibition at “Portraits of Hackney Wick” in East London in 2016.

In the same year, Annie Atkins made a huge impression on me at her workshop in Dublin, which encouraged me to pursue my analogue craft.

For a short while, I was lead astray to Barcelona, a city that I would describe as an amazing creative sandbox where collaboration between artists flourishes and opportunities to exhibit flow.

London, however never stopped calling me and so I moved back in 2019 making my collages and other things creative.
